Blue Victoria is proud to announce the official launch of our IoT-based water monitoring project in Lake Victoria, a major step forward in strengthening data-driven conservation and climate resilience in the basin. This initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute, combining scientific expertise with innovative technology to better understand and protect freshwater ecosystems. Lake Victoria faces increasing environmental challenges, including pollution, climate change impacts, declining water quality, and recurring fish mortality events such as Kifereji. Addressing these issues requires timely, accurate, and continuous data—something that has been limited in many parts of the lake. Through this project, Blue Victoria is leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology to bridge this gap and support more effective monitoring and response systems.
TIn the first phase of the project, we will install four IoT water monitoring devices at strategic locations in Lake Victoria. These devices will collect real-time data on key water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and turbidity. The data will be transmitted and analyzed to provide early insights into environmental changes, helping to detect risks before they escalate into major ecological or economic losses. This initiative not only strengthens scientific monitoring but also supports local communities, fishers, and policymakers with actionable information. By combining technology with local knowledge and partnerships, we are laying the foundation for a smarter, more responsive freshwater management system. Blue Victoria is excited about the future potential of this project, including scaling up the system and integrating advanced tools such as AI for predictive analysis and early warning. Together, we are advancing innovation to protect Lake Victoria and secure sustainable livelihoods for generations to come.
