Lake Victoria supports millions of people who depend on fisheries for food, income, employment, and cultural identity. For many communities living along its shores, fishing is not only a livelihood but also a way of life that sustains households and local economies. However, the fisheries sector is facing increasing pressure from overfishing, illegal and destructive fishing practices, habitat degradation, pollution, invasive species, and the growing impacts of climate change. Rising water temperatures, fluctuating lake levels, and declining water quality are disrupting fish breeding grounds and threatening the long-term sustainability of fish stocks. In addition, poor fish handling, limited cold storage, and inadequate preservation methods contribute to significant post-harvest losses, reducing incomes for fishers and processors—especially women, who make up a large share of post-harvest actors.
Blue Victoria is committed to promoting sustainable fisheries through community-driven solutions that protect aquatic ecosystems while strengthening livelihoods. Our strategy focuses on improving responsible fishing practices by raising awareness among fishing communities about sustainable harvesting methods, fisheries regulations, and ecosystem stewardship. We work closely with fishers, women fish processors, and youth to build their capacity in improved fish handling, hygienic processing, and innovative preservation technologies that reduce waste and improve product quality.
We also introduce practical innovations such as improved fish drying systems, solar-powered technologies, and alternative livelihood opportunities that reduce pressure on overexploited fish stocks. By empowering communities with skills, tools, and knowledge, we help create more resilient fisheries value chains that generate higher incomes and better food security.
In addition, Blue Victoria promotes inclusive participation in fisheries governance by encouraging local communities to engage in decision-making processes related to resource management. We believe that sustainable fisheries can only be achieved when the people most dependent on the resource are directly involved in protecting it.
Our vision is a thriving and resilient fisheries sector in the Lake Victoria Basin where fish populations are sustainably managed, aquatic ecosystems are healthy, and fishing communities—especially youth and women—have secure livelihoods, economic opportunities, and the capacity to adapt to environmental change. Through innovation, education, and collaboration, we aim to ensure that Lake Victoria remains a sustainable source of life and prosperity for generations to come.
