Lake Victoria is one of Africa’s most important freshwater ecosystems, supporting a rich diversity of fish species, aquatic plants, wetlands, birds, and other wildlife that are essential for ecological balance and community livelihoods. The Lake Victoria Basin contains several Bird Important Areas and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), including Mara Bay & Masisori Swamps KBA, Mori Bay KBA, Emin Pasha Gulf KBA, which are internationally recognized for their ecological significance [for more BKAs info for the basin]. Within Emin Pasha Gulf KBA lies Rubondo Island National Park, an important protected area that provides refuge for freshwater and terrestrial biodiversity. However, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened by pollution, habitat destruction, invasive species, unsustainable fishing, and climate change. Invasive aquatic weeds such as water hyacinth and Salvinia spp. are spreading rapidly across parts of the lake, blocking waterways, reducing oxygen levels, disrupting fish breeding habitats, and affecting transport and fishing activities. Wetland degradation, agricultural runoff, untreated wastewater, and plastic pollution further threaten native species, including endangered and endemic freshwater fish.
Blue Victoria is committed to protecting and restoring freshwater biodiversity through community-led conservation approaches that combine science, innovation, and local stewardship. Our strategy focuses on safeguarding critical habitats, restoring degraded ecosystems, protecting endangered species, and strengthening ecological monitoring systems. We work closely with fishing communities, youth, women, and local leaders to establish community conservation areas, improve wetland restoration, and promote sustainable natural resource management that reduces pressure on sensitive ecosystems.
To address emerging threats, we use innovative technologies such as GIS, and IoT-based environmental monitoring systems to track ecosystem health and guide evidence-based conservation action. We also support invasive species awareness and response efforts to reduce the spread and impacts of water hyacinth and Salvinia spp. By combining local ecological knowledge with scientific research, we create practical and inclusive conservation solutions that empower communities to protect their natural heritage. Our vision is a resilient Lake Victoria Basin where KBAs, wetlands, and freshwater habitats are restored and protected, invasive species are effectively managed, and biodiversity thrives alongside sustainable community development for generations to come.
