Climate change is increasingly threatening the ecological and economic stability of the Lake Victoria Basin, where millions of people depend on fisheries, aquaculture, and freshwater ecosystems for survival. Rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, prolonged droughts, floods, and changing wind patterns are affecting water quality, fish breeding cycles, and aquatic habitats. One of the most alarming climate-related challenges in Lake Victoria is the recurring phenomenon locally known as “KIFEREZI” —sudden mass fish die-offs in both wild fisheries and fish cages, often associated with low dissolved oxygen levels caused by water stratification, upwelling, pollution, and rapid weather changes. These events have caused severe losses for fishers and fish farmers across the basin. Similar mass mortality incidents have affected cage fish farmers elsewhere in Lake Victoria, A recent video recorded by a fish farmer in Lake Victoria shows the devastating loss of an entire cage stock during one such event: [Watch Youtube Video] .
Blue Victoria is addressing this challenge by combining climate resilience action with technology-driven monitoring systems. Currently, we use IoT-based water quality monitoring devices together with community-generated field data to track environmental conditions linked to Kifereji incidents. These tools help monitor key parameters such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and turbidity in real time, while local fishers and farmers contribute observations that improve incident detection and response. This combination of technology and community knowledge strengthens early identification of risk patterns and helps vulnerable communities prepare for sudden fish mortality events.
Looking ahead, Blue Victoria has the ambition to develop an AI-powered early warning and response system specifically designed to predict and respond to Kifereji events. By integrating sensor data, historical environmental records, and community reports, this future system will provide predictive alerts, risk forecasts, and rapid response guidance to fishers and fish farmers before losses occur.
Our vision is a climate-resilient Lake Victoria Basin where advanced technology, local knowledge, and adaptive communities work together to reduce climate risks, protect livelihoods, and safeguard freshwater ecosystems for generations to come.
